thxmoo summary

thxmoo is a virtual world based on the story of THX-1138 by George
Lucas. As in the story, characters in thxmoo are born and raised in
a post world war III subterranean shelter. Players can control their
emotional and psychological states by use of state prescribed pills,
sensual stimuli and deity worship. Players may make it their goal to
attempt to escape to the surface where mystery and the unknown dwell.
This requires achieving a chemical balance by experimenting with
various pill prescriptions and other activities. Other players may
choose to become integral parts of the subterranean world.

character role playing

Guests are generated when a player connects as 'thxmoo'. Regular
players may run 'thxmoo' at the SDF shell to generate or load a
character. The MOO then uses sperm and egg from an existing couple to
generate a new player. The player name (AAA-NNNN), sex and race are
generated by the system. Players will start the game as a child, be
trained by mentors and live in the nursery. After a period of regular
game play, a player is then coupled at which sperm and egg will be
extracted to propogate the species. If you can find the REPRODUCTION
CENTER it is possible to deduce your biological parents, if you care.

character development and space

Character features and dwellings are up to players. This is really
the only liberty you have. However, if you deviate you risk arrest.
Matured characters dwellings are in the QUARTERS dormatory and can
be arranged to your taste. Food medication and stimulation are all
provided in your dwelling. The most interesting aspect of all
dwellings is the MEDICINE CHEST. When you open your chest, the system
will ask you 'Whats wrong?'. You then describe how you are feeling and
the chest will dispense medication. Each player has a designated
chemical balance/inbalance which can be sustained or counter acted
by drug use, misuse and/or abstinence.

mobiles, holograms and robotic police

Nearly all mobiles are players who have gone so insane that they
no longer can function. They are considered dangerous and are
mostly found in the PRISON CHAMBER and WHITE LIMBO. However, talking
with mobiles may help you if your goal is to escape.

In the game there are two races, black and white. If your new
character is generated as a black, you will be a hologram. Holograms
exist outside of the THX system, and are effectively ignored by
robotic police. Players as holograms take an observer's role in the
game. They can interact and help other players. The probability of
the system generating a hologram is low.

Robotic police are mobiles that keep characters in line. They have
the ability to arrest deviants and either bring them back to their
dwelling in the QUARTERS dormatory or place the player in the PRISON.

character stats and how to manipulate them

Character stats are kept internal to the system. Rather than express
these stats as hit point, strength, dexterity .. et cetera that you
would commonly see in a MUD or MOO, these stats are expressed in how
your character feels and behaves. use and misuse of
daily state prescribed drugs, hologram stimulation and deity worship
are all factors in determining how your character feels and performs.
Your daily prescription is available at the MEDICINE CHEST once your
character matures and is assigned a room in the QUARTERS dormatory.
Each room in the dormatory is equipped with a HOLOGRAM generator.
PRAYER BOOTHs can be found in all the main PLAZAs. Since each player
has a predisposed chemical imbalance, it is not possible to
know exactly how each of the three activities will affect your
character until you actually begin experimenting. Pills are the
only attribute which can be carried and given to other players.
However, pills expire within 800 cycles and must either be
used or given to another player within that time. Carrying or
dropping a prescribed perscription that has expired will result in
a drug violation and subsequent arrest.

character leveling and role playing

There really are no levels, but rather ages, which are:

embryo, foetus, infant, yearling, youth, adolescent,
adult, middle-aged, old, elderly, dying and dead.

While the first two and the last are very restrictive, most all
other ages have the same abilities. The first ages up to and
including adolescence are meant to be short lived to give a new
player a bearing on what THXMOO is about. Most players will live
most of the game as an adult and beyond. It is important to note
that while state prescribed perscriptions are mandatory for adults,
adolescent players are free to experiment with whatever they may
find. Players are expected to role play at all times with the
exception being in the LOUNGE which is found in the REST PLAZA.
While knowing the subject matter is helpful, it is not at all
necessary and people of all interests are encouraged to play.

puzzles, secrets and goals

thxmoo contains many puzzles which act as locks to various
sectors and portions of the moo. Many of these sectors will
lead to unmapped and undocumented areas of the moo. In some
cases these areas are randomly generated and therefore cannot
be mapped. Like wise, all puzzles are randomly generated and
require brute force to solve them. Some are easy, some are hard,
all are solvable. Some sectors may seem to loop back into
themselves, but they are actually leading you elsewhere.

While it may be your personal goal to escape the moo, it might
not agree with your character, especially if you have not sussed
its emotional and psychological state. once you have escaped
you are free to build in the WASTELAND with the only exception
being that you may not link back to the CITY COMPOUND. True
roleplayers will be assigned jobs by the SCHEDULING OFFICE and
will be required to work in their designated SECTOR. Compensation
for this time is paid in credits which may be used in
the LOUNGE and CONSUMER PLAZA.

thxmoo is a MORPG developed in ISLISP using OpenLISP v8.1.0
under NetBSD on a CS20 DEC Alpha run by the SDF Public Access UNIX System.
